Gashes in the green.
Stumps and roots serve in
Rubber-band bondage.
A forced transfusion.
By chlorophoric suture
New branches bear with borrowed strength.
But ungrateful prodigals all,
they toss the bounty to the ground.

With my nearly life-long resonance with Jesus’ metaphor of branches abiding on the vine, I appreciated your poem, especially the lines about a forced transfusion and borrowed strength. I couldn’t help but wonder about things like: whether rubber band bondage slowly becomes natural attachment, and if, not just the ungrateful prodigal fruit, but also the grateful ones can toss their bounty to the ground from which other fruit can grow.
