Rev. Dr. Micah L. McCreary has served as the 12th President of New
Brunswick Theological Seminary (NBTS) since 2017. He brings a rich and diverse academic
background, holding a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Michigan; a Master
of Divinity from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University; and both
a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University
(VCU).
Dr. McCreary is the recipient of numerous prestigious fellowships, including the American
Psychological Association Minority Fellowship, the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia
Fellowship, and the American Council on Education Presidential Fellowship.
Before joining NBTS, Dr. McCreary was President and CEO of McCreary and Madison Associates, a
psychological and human resources consulting firm based in Richmond, Virginia. He also served for
over two decades as a tenured Associate Professor of Psychology at VCU, where he held several
leadership roles, including Assistant Vice Provost for Diversity, Quality Enhancement Plan
Coordinator, and Co-Director of the Counseling Psychology Program.
A respected scholar and speaker, Dr. McCreary is the author of Trauma and Race: A Pathway to
Wellbeing (Fortress Press, 2023). He is widely sought after as a preacher and teacher, frequently
addressing topics such as trauma and race, church hurt and suicidal ideation, and the intersections
of spirituality and psychology.
