Thomas Schmidt

Thomas Schmidt is a retired humanities professor who began submitting his poetry in 2018. Since then, he has published two chapbooks, Enough to Drink or Drown (Kelsay Books, 2020) and Like, A Metaphor (Encircle Publications, 2021), and more than fifty of his poems have appeared in journals, including Christian Century, Solum Literary Journal, Penwood Review, The Cresset, and Jewish Literary Review. ”Particle (Meta)physics" appears in Rowing with Either Oar, Tom's first full-length poetry collection (Solum Literary Press, 2024).

I know, I know, the universe is so big that you can’t be significant.So, let’s go small.Let two grains of sand rest in your hand an inch apart.A single silicon atom in one of those grains is .2 nanometers in diameter,Or one two-hundred billionth of an inch.That’s 100 thousand times the size of a proton in the middle of that silicon atom,And the proton is 1835 times the size of an electron spinning around it at 1400 miles per second.Electrons…
