Obscurely yet surely backyard birds
simple & further from corruption with
the wonder of wings call us to praise

A sparrow caught & fluttering in the
mechanism of the feeder’s perch
gave a forlorn cry & lay still

resigned to futility Carefully I
reached a gloved hand to manoeuver
her free concerned her injuries fatal

Wondernumb to their comings &
goings I was still struck as her
loosened body shockingly gone

to a distant tree needed no pause
for recovery doing then & always
as she is called to do
