That moment when, in the midst of wreckage
and tears, you see a scarlet cardinal
across the way, and last evening,
he and his mate, more russet than red,
alighted in your yard amid destruction
from a hurricane, the two feeding
on unearthed worms and seeds.
It is then you feel the Spirit’s presence,
unbidden beauty nourishing your soul.
