Can We Talk?

Having recently published a book that ponders the relationship between theology and science, I can attest to what perhaps many writers in this field feel: namely, I wish I had written my book about five or ten years earlier, before the current explosion of interest in this subject! As it is, the plethora of titles now available means that even those interested in reading more about faith and science will likely choose just one or two books, being forced to…

Changing the Channel

In March someone got a hold of Vice President Dick Cheney's list of "downtime requirements" and promptly posted it on the Internet. Having such a list of requested amenities is standard practice for celebrities and politicians who travel a lot. Mr. Cheney's list is, for the most part, unremarkable with one exception: before arriving, the Vice President asks that all televisions in his hotel room be tuned to Fox News. Late-night comedians had a field day with that particular item!…

My God and I: A Spiritual Memoir

Not long ago a well-known, highly accomplished author wrote an "op-ed"-type article in the New York Times Book Review.  Surveying the publishing landscape, this author sniffed dismissively at the welter of autobiographies and memoirs on the market.  He noted the oft-heard observation that something like eighty percent of people think their life story is interesting enough to tell.  In his considered opinion, a quick glance at the average bookstore would reveal that most of the people who think that way…

A Marriage Made in Heaven

Many people who have investigated the relationship between theology and science realize that no single model is adequate to serve as a general description of this relationship. The manner in which these two fields relate to one another (or fail to relate, as the case may be) varies greatly from place to place. Hence, some writers from more mainline traditions have been known to declare with confidence that the days of conflict between people of faith and people of science…

Where’s the Outrage?

A week after last November's mid-term elections in the United States, magazines like Time had cover stories about the Republican "breeze." Some of these covers showed prominent Republicans beaming broadly over their historically unusual success. This motivated many writers to project what may happen as a result of this ostensible "mandate" for the party presently in power. Chief among the items flagged are issues relating to the environment. As it stands, despite an early defeat on the push for oil…
